When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Have you ever noticed, when God speaks, most of the people, who might have heard the voice, don’t. They think they hear the sound of thunder, or grumbling winds. Only the person who was meant to hear God’s voice actually hears God speak and understands what He says. It happens quite often in the story of Scripture.
If you had been at the Jordan that day, having come to the river to be baptized by John, what would you have seen and heard when Jesus came up out of the water. There is no mention in Luke’s account of the crowd responding one way or the other. This leads me to believe the voice of God, in fact, the action of God, is only visible and audible to those who have faith in God, who speaks and works among people, among us.
The Russian cosmonaut, who first circled the earth, reported he had ascended into the heavens and god was nowhere to be found. His eyes were blinded by a lack of faith in God. Those who cannot hear God’s voice are deaf due to the same failure.
If we are not hearing God speak to us, if we are not seeing God work among us, we must pray: “Lord, open my ears to hear your voice, and my eyes to see your works. Amen”Tags: Bob, Church Blog, Pastor Bob, Pastors Blog
