1 Kings 18:36-39
Let It Be Known
At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” (vv. 36-37)
The nation of Israel and its leaders had moved away from God. They continued to give lip service to the God of their Fathers, but in their hearts, they were totally devoted to the god, Baal. They had turned their backs, collectively, on the One true God, following the lead ot their king, Ahab and his wife, Jezebel.
The prophets and priests of God were in hiding, imprisoned, or worse, dead. It was the Queen’s desire to completely rid the land of all those who worshiped God! The Prophet, Elijah, had eluded their manhunt, until now. In the story, we find him turning himself in and challenging the prophets of Baal and their god to a battle. His challenge: The one true God will answer prayer.
Each side built an altar on the mountaintop, placed the wood and the sacrifice upon the altar, then called upon their god to consume it with fire. The priests and prophets of Baal prayed to their god for hours, begging him to come and burn up the sacrifice, nothing happened. Finally, Elijah prayed, the prayer above. He knew and trusted God! Prayer was heard and the sacrifice was consumed! Our Lord is God, INDEED!Tags: Bob, Church Blog, Pastor Bob, Pastors Blog
