Devotions for the 2nd Week of Advent–The Question: WHEN?

Advent-wreath-week-2Daily Reading:

The second week of Advent asks the question: “WHEN?” What is the significance of time in the Story of Jesus’ coming? What is meant by: “In the fullness of Time”? The Greeks distinguished between Kronos and Kairos. Kronos had to do with the quantity of time: hours to years. Kairos has to do with the quality of time: that special moment when heaven meets earth and Kronos-time stops. Jesus’ coming is a Kairos-moment.

Monday—December 9

Isaiah 40:3-5—”Prepare the way for the Lord.” The time is at hand and the Anointed One is coming. Advent is the season of preparation. It is the time when we are called to have eyes to see what God is doing. “The glory of the Lord” will be revealed in the birth of a child, Jesus. Are we READY?

Tuesday—December 10

Luke 1:26-38—She was just a teenager, hardly old enough in years to be considered fit to be the mother of the Lord! Yet, when the angel of the Lord appeared to her, she was ready to hear the news and obey the will of God. Her words ring true to this day, “May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Wednesday—December 11

Luke 4:16-21—”Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” The passage Jesus read, Isaiah 61:1-2, ends with the words, “to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor”. Jesus’ coming signals the fulfillment of God’s plan for time. His coming is that special moment in time (a Kairos-moment) when God enters fully into his creation and brings salvation.

Thursday—December 12

John 7:28-31—The “right-time” implies that there are also “wrong-times”. The leaders of Israel try to seize Jesus, but they are unable to do it! Why? Because the Kairos-moment had not arrived. By the way, the “right-time” may not be an easy time. It can be the time to take up our cross and follow him, even to death!

Friday—December 13

Matthew 24:42-44—”Keep watch”, the time is approaching and we do not know the day or the hour! Advent is the season of preparation for the coming of Our Lord Jesus. It is the time for us not only to get our homes decorated for the season; but, the time to prepare our hearts and lives for Jesus’ arrival. It is a season of confession, repentance, and renewal to God’s purposes for us.

Saturday—December 14

John 13:1—”Jesus, knew that the hour had come…” The time was fulfilled, the hour had come, the Cross loomed on the horizon! Jesus came for just this Kairos-moment. Everything he did pointed him to this day, this place, this time, this CROSS! Are we ready? The WHEN? question is this question.

Looking ahead: Sunday, December 15, the message is from Micah 5:2-5a, Luke 2:1-7, and responds to the “WHERE” question; the answer has to do with “The Significance of Place”.
