Read: Luke 24:13-35
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:30-32, NIV)
Have you ever experienced a “pinch me” moment? You find yourself in a situation that is simply unbelievable, unreal. You say to the person next to you, “Pinch me, please, I need to know if this is really happening.”
It was one of those moments for these two Jesus’ followers. They had been in Jerusalem, “hangers on” to the prophet,
and hoped for, Messiah, Jesus. They had so hoped he was the ONE! Then, they had witnessed it all fall apart. Jesus had been arrested, they had watched the crowd turn on him and call for his death, by crucifixion, no less. They had watched and followed him in the streets as his beaten body carried his Cross to Golgotha. They had seen him nailed to the crossbeams and harshly placed in the ground. From a distance, they had witnessed his death!
Stranded in the city for the Passover, they had mourned his death and the end of the dream. He could not be Messiah, dying such a cursed death, his body wrapped and buried in a sealed tomb. They had heard the stories of the confused women of Jesus’ missing body. They finally left Jerusalem to return to their home, more confused now than ever before.
They had been joined in their sad journey by this man. He talked to them about the weekend’s events, asking them piercing questions and raising intriguing truths. Then, they invited him to join them for supper, and it happened; the “pinch me” moment. He broke the bread and gave it to them. They sat there, stunned! It was HIM! He WAS alive! Then, he was gone!
Ask Jesus to reveal himself to you, today! Ask him to make his presence known to you in new and “pinch me” ways! Then, don’t be surprised when he shows up!
