dogs-love-human-beingsI walk in the house and am greeted by 5 pounds of Joy! She scurries around my feet, jumping and running and barking, rejoicing at my arrival. Her name is Penny and she is what my son refers to as an eighth of a dog, a miniature Yorkie. She is “devoted” to me. I sit down on the couch and she jumps up and wants to sit in my lap and show me her loving commitment to me. If I don’t immediately respond, she is devastated. I, sometimes, tell her to settle down. But, I know it is fruitless, she loves me! Her loyalty and commitment and love for me is total and without condition (she loves me even when I don’t give her the treat she wants from me).

This has led me to think about our loyalty and commitment to God. How excited do we get when Sunday morning, 10:30 am, rolls around. Do we jump and shout for joy? Or, do we mope around, wishing we could be someplace else? We get up in the morning and have to make a choice: do we open up our Bible and spend time with God in the Word and in prayer; or, do we turn on the morning news show and sit down with Matt? The day is coming to an end and the bed is beckoning, but we remember that commitment to spend time each day in prayer (a commitment we have too often shirked): do we stop our journey to bed and sit down and pray; or, do we give up and go to bed?

The Psalmist writes: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:1-2, NIV) He describes a life committed to God. Again, he writes: “How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.” (Psalm 84:1-2, NIV) My prayer is that we might share that same loyalty and commitment to God! Oh, that we might discover a new JOY at finding ourselves in his incredible presence, not because of what he has done, but because of who he is! I want to find myself scurrying around the feet of our Lord, jumping for joy, at his presence!
